The New ICF Core Competencies
(2025)
This month, we turn our attention to the very foundation of our profession — the ICF Core Competencies. Following a rigorous 14-month global job analysis involving nearly 3,000 coaches worldwide, the International Coaching Federation (ICF) has released the updated 2025 ICF Core Competencies. This evolution reflects how the practice of coaching has matured since 2019 — integrating deeper awareness, reflective maturity, and responsiveness to today’s diverse and complex coaching environments.
While the eight core competencies remain, the 2025 update introduces five new subcompetencies, revisions to eleven existing sub competencies, an updated competency definition, and a comprehensive glossary for greater consistency and clarity. These refinements enhance our capacity as coaches to demonstrate presence, uphold ethical standards, and nurture genuine partnership with greater emotional, cultural, and contextual intelligence.
Join us as we explore what’s new, what’s evolved, and what this means for us as professional
coaches committed to mastery, ethics, and continuous growth.
